OFFICE OF SPEAKER JEP APPELO
SIXTH DISTRICT OF SAN ANDREAS
SAN ANDREAS STATE SENATE

NOVEMBER 3, 2016 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement on Republican attempts to poison the SPARTA Act

Recently Republican lawmakers have attempted to poison pill my anti-terrorism bill, by attempting to strip language protecting disabled, ethnic, religious and sexual minorities from acts of hatred. This attempt to kill hate crime provisions is morally bankrupt, normatively wrong, and unpatriotic.

Not long ago, the Republican Party leadership released this statement on their stance for the LGBT community.

"Let us be clear, we heavily support all homosexual, transgender or bisexual or any sexuality and we will defend them from any hateful speech against them."

Now these same politicians intend to kill hate crime provisions in the SPARTA Act intended to protect homosexual, transgender and bisexual Americans. Even Senator Barrett Johnson, who initially supported the entire bill, has turned against it for political expediency with his friends on the far-right. The Democratic Party will always fight to make sure our LGBT community is proactively protected and safe. Let's bring our state up to speed with the rest of the country by introducing hate crime laws.

Hate crime provisions were unanimously agreed to in the Public Safety and State Security Committee, with approval from the Department of Justice, and our state’s law enforcement agencies during the creation of the bill. Republicans argue against hate crime laws under the guise of 'protecting' the Constitution. In fact, the United States Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, has already decided that hate crime laws are in fact constitutional.

We encourage San Andreans to carefully watch who votes to strip out hate crime provisions, because the topic will come up again in the next election cycle.
