The Irish-American Mob

Post by Chuckles » Sat May 19, 2018 11:02 pm

Irish Mob
From Wikipedia, the free enclypedia

Los Santos' Irish-American Mob is a structured crime syndicate modernly installed and predominantly situated in the East and South West of the city. The Irish-American Mob is one of the underworld's eldest and most reprimanded organized crime groups in the United States. The modern Irish-American Mob has faded out in most of its previous strongholds and Los Santos has long been considered its domicile.

The Irish-American mob is still active in the United States, but is very much transparent and flying under the radar of law enforcement who have publicly spoken about their extinction. Despite popular opinion, the Irish-American Mob has its chief constituents monopolising portions of the city. The majority of prominent members of the mob are derivatives and holdovers from past generations.

The Murray Crime Syndicate [edit]

The Murray Crime Syndicate who are widely renowned as the "godfathers of the Irish-American mob" were an Irish-American mob who held court in East Los Santos.

Key figures such as Francis Murray, Derek Irvine, Gerard Kavanagh, Frank Coonan, John Kelly, Joseph Donohue and Peter Flaherty.

The Coonan Mob [edit]

The Coonan Mob, once one of the most powerful and influential Irish mobs in America, spanning across California, Boston and Florida. After the disappearance, arrest and murder of several of the mob’s previous bosses, The Coonan Mob's presence in the city diminished and went into dismay shortly after.

Most of the mob's most loyal and front members such Frank Coonan, John Coonan, Patrick Logan, Peter Flaherty, Keegan Campbell, Patrick Amherst and Patrick Tucker are all either dead or incarcerated which ultimately led to the the mob's demise after the introduction of the RICO law.

Coonan was a continuation of the Murray Crime Syndicate after its downfall. The only living relative of Frank "Buddy" Coonan is his nephew, son to brother John, Mark Coonan, who sits at the helm of today's variation of the Irish-American Mob.

The Lanagan Crime Family [edit]

The Lanagan Crime Family is a primarily East Los Santos based organized crime group comprised of members who are predominantly of Irish and Italian descent.

The criminal organization, which has roots in San Diego, began its transition to Los Santos in the gang infested neighborhoods of Las Colinas and Jefferson, where it operated as a small and tight-knit crew working with the West Coast Cosa Nostra, local bikers gangs, and Romanian mafia members in the area.

Alleged leader Gary "the Old Man" Lanagan is a former union boss and the co-owner of one of the largest fruit distributors in the State of San Andreas. He has been alleged to rub shoulders with government officials as well as prominent figures in the Los Santos underworld. Other high-ranking members of the Lanagan mob include Gerald "Jerry" Huff, Frank "the Fist" Deasy, and Morris Gilsenen.

Gerald Huff and the semi-retired Frank Deasy, a former professional featherweight boxer, split their time between Los Santos and San Diego, acting as agents for Lanagan's criminal interests in the city that date back to his childhood friendship with Frank Carna, a prominent member in the San Diego crew of the Valenti crime family and later on figurehead within the Los Santos faction of the family. Despite Frank Carna's death in 2015, Lanagan upheld his ties to the Valenti family in an attempt to help the family rebuild its struggling organization and strengthen its rule over the West Coast.

Gilsenen, besides serving as Gary Lanagan's main muscle in both union and street activity, was considered to be a large weapons trafficker in the west coast in his heydey, supplying street gangs, the Irish mob, the American mafia, and several local biker gangs with military-grade weaponry.

Los Santos has had a reputation for attracting outsiders seeking to take advantage of the seemingly never-ending power struggle that exists within its underworld, including Irish-American mobs from Boston, Kansas City and Philadelphia, but most of them are either defunct or liquidated by competitive mafia factions.

The O'Leary mob was no exception. In April 2018, Daniel Kavanagh, the reputed leader of the organization who ran its day-to-day operations out of his headquarters, a diner on 54th Street, was found dead a few miles outside of Los Santos. Briefly before Kavanagh's death, he had allegedly been mingling with Lanagan mob boss Gary Lanagan in an attempt to consolidate his power base in East Los Santos. The Old Man's alibi, after being questioned by detectives regarding the gangland killing of the mob boss, was a vacation in San Diego, from which he did not return until September, when things had cooled down in Los Santos. Lanagan claimed that his relationship with Kavanagh was nothing but a business venture, and insisted that he had no involvement in the killing.

Other Irish-American organized crime groups have been taken down by law enforcement. The violent and ruthless East Beach-based O'Reilly mob, named after Michael O'Reilly and his nephew Francis O'Reilly, is a typical example. By August 2012, O'Reilly's criminal enterprise was wiped out after constant pressure from federal investigations and numerous indictments.

Paradoxically, Lanagan organization members have remained in the shadows and veiled themselves in legitimacy through legal businesses and operations. This mob recipe has proven to be a successful one, in that most members have avoided long, if any, prison sentences and, for the most part, remained uncharted for the law-abiding public.

Unlike the traditional mafia, with its well-defined hierarchy and chain of command, the structure of Lanagan's gang is much more flexible, in that its members are easily replaced and operations moved or abandoned on short notice.

The South End Gang [edit]
The South End Gang is an Irish-American Mob with its roots largely inherited from South Boston, where the majority of prominent Winter Hill Gang figures helped shape the fundamentals and forever change the course of Boston's Irish-American Mob.

Alternatively known as the "The Coonan Mob," the South End Gang is a catalogue of prominent organized crime figures, predominantly consisting of holdovers from previous organized crime groups and adolescent street level thugs who shape the ground as a foundation.

Professed mob boss and successor of previous mob luminaries is no other than Mark "The Monk" Coonan. Coonan, a self proclaimed mercenary and holy Joe who worked as a street level enforcer for the majority of his criminal career, until his position was propelled after the sudden death of his father and long-considered "godfather" of the Irish American Mob. Coonan was responsible for up to seventy percent of the mob's murders during his heyday.

Coonan's flamboyancy and apparent disregard for the causatum of his beguilment became antecedent during the inevitable rise to prominence. Now at the helm of the organization, Coonan's stoic in demeanour and tries to keep its present in the city Los Santos' best-kept secret to avoid scrutiny from local and international law enforcement.

The South End Gang is the chief constituent of LS' Irish-American Mob alongside the now-consolidated Lanagan Crime Family. Unlike its Italian counterpart, members of the Irish-American Mob are relatively nonchalant and stoic in demeanour, which is an even further testament to their transparency within civilisation.

According to a good source, the majority of the members and up and comers in the organization are members of local environments and neighbourhoods controlled by the mob. On the contrary to its competitor, the La Cosa Nostra, memberships and promotions of the mob are widely reliant on members of its local community and respect. Although mostly are of Irish heritage, membership to the mob is not limited to this. A handful of the mobs membership consists of other ethnic groups, such as Italian, Polish and other European cultures.
Prominent figures within the organization include Mark Coonan, Shane Cusack, Terry Drury, Nate Beaumont and James Egan.

It's said that Coonan and his disciples are solely responsible for 60 percent of the arms circulating in the East of the city.

The Eastern Hill Gang [edit]

The Eastern Hill Gang is an Irish-American street gang loosely structured and associated around the monopoly that is the Coonan Crime Syndicate. The majority of members within the gang are of Irish and other European descent. For decades, East Los Santos was synonymous with the Irish-American mob and up until recently, their presence in the area was diminishing. The once-majority Irish stronghold is now slowly getting on its feet at the direction of Coonan's nephew, and ruthless street enforcer turned captain, James "Jimmy" Coonan-Maguire. The gang, notorious for their brutality and unorthodox killing methods, are said to be Coonan's muscle. It's speculated that the Easties are responsible for the majority of gangland murders in the area and on Coonan's behalf.

Involved in multiple rackets and connected to a long line of organized crime groups, the gang boasts a small but solid memberlist. Prominent members in the gang include gang leader James Maguire, Shane Whelan, Richard Dempsey, Liam Bernagh and Kevin Shea. The gang and the aforementioned members are most known for their involvement in extortion, racketeering and murder-for-hire.

Out of Character Information

The recent change in both structure and appearance probably has a lot of people wondering and trying to comprehend what exactly is going on.

Allow me to elaborate. The Irish mob scene on LS:RP is something of particular interest, but not everybody's cup of tea. We don't see them often because they only come around every once in a blue moon and its previous problem with gaining members was that people weren't familiar with its concept, portrayal or its linguistics. I think by taking a step in this direction and consolidating with The Lanagan Crime Family, we both monopolize the Irish-American roleplaying scene and offer roleplayers both continuity and longevity, the possibility for future Irish-American factions to roleplay realistically with both history and roots.

Rather than having a multitude of factions sporadically opening, we're trying to bring something both original and realistic to the table. Irish-American mobs in general aren't as heterogeneous, their presence in a singular city wouldn't be as crammed in and for us to come together as one and collaborate, it offers the next generation of roleplayers insight and history of up to ten years to work around. My roots, as a Coonan date back to the Murray Crime Syndicate days, which was almost ten years ago in 2009. That's ten years of history at your disposal.

Without further ado, I welcome you to the Irish-American roleplaying scene with open arms. Alexa, search Irish-American Mob.

Origins of the South End Gang

The South End Gang, alternatively known as The Coonan crime syndicate consists of holdovers and remainders from South Boston's Winter Hill Gang who left to Los Santos during the activation of the RICO case against the Winter Hill Gang. John Coonan himself, and a handful of natives from South Boston are derivatives of one of the most prominent Irish mobs to have ever operated on American soil. Coonan, although not an insider or susceptible to the act, was only vaguely associated at the time of the indictments.

Irish mobs are still active in the US, but are very much transparent and flying under the radar of law enforcement who have publicly spoken about their extinction. Despite popular opinion, the Coonan Crime Syndicate is the chief constituent of Los Santos' Irish mob. The majority of prominent members and up and comers of the organization are Los Santos inhabitants.

https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/deca ... 1980s.html (older forenames)
https://names.mongabay.com/male_names.htm (common forenames, present)
http://www.ireland-information.com/hera ... rnames.htm (surnames, multiple other sources, just ask)

When picking a name, pick a name that suits your character. Age, to be precise. Irish-Americans will evidently have American forenames, but dependent on the generation they were born in, certain names were a lot less common. For aspiring members roleplaying older gen, I'd recommend traditional names like Frank, Raymond, John, Gerard, Joseph and for the modernized characters, I'd suggest American forenames that are relevant today. As far as the surname goes, that should be distinctively Irish because that's way beyond your years. This is, of course, directed to the aspiring Irish-American characters and not other Caucasoids we encourage in small portions.

I think the most common misconception surrounding Irish-American mobs and organisations is that they're distinctively Irish, this couldn't be further from the truth and although the majority do boast a long line of Irish ancestry, any knowledge, sentiments and otherwise traditions are conventionally past through generations. Irish-Americans, or for the patriotic characters, American born Irishmen, largely play off their Irish heritage and roots but they're routinely American born and raised, fourth plus generation Irish. The straight off the boat, Gaelic speaking factions that have been floating around the server for as long as I can remember are largely stereotypical and hold essentially no relevance to the modern Irish mob. Ancient Irish gangs in America like The Dead Rabbit Gang and the Five Points Gang were compromised of Irish descendants during the mass immigration from Ireland as a result of the Great Famine. Again, great for an insight into the history and origins of the Irish mob, but hold no relevance in today's day and age.

The likelihood of an Irish-American being distinguished by their accent or presentation is minimal, unlike your flamboyant, stick out like a sore thumb Italian counterparts, members of the Irish mob are relatively nonchalant and stoic in demeanour, which is an even further testament to their transparency within civilisation. For instance, the majority of the Irish mob's ranked members are from blue collar neighbourhoods and working class backgrounds and largely work regular jobs for the most part. A little look into the history, members of the Irish mob, typically the Westies and the Winter Hill Gang, were products of the local environment, prominent members you could count with one hand and the rest low level, small time thugs who muscled and fenced for the mob, which I'll elaborate on later. To revert back to the consensus behind the blue collar and working class distinction I previously made, these thugs and "members" of the mob were commonly referred to by their trade. For instance, Nate Beaumont the bartender, Terry Drury the boxer, Shane Cusack and Marty Healy, remainders of John Coonan's era. Considering the abnormality of an Irish-American mob presence in Southern San Andreas, the command of the faction roleplay as South Boston derivatives and essentially a subsidiary of the South Boston Irish mob, which is why for the most part emphasis is put on that strong Boston dialect.

https://i.imgur.com/Ed7MM7B.png (see this for depiction of the "ranking structure")

The ranking structure within Irish mobs isn't as formal. It consists of a boss, right hand, enforcer and a member. Members of the Irish mob have associates working for them. In the Irish mob, your authority is designated by respect as opposed to rituals. Build a trust, make these motherfuckers think "How will this guy be beneficial to us?"

Before I elaborate on fences and rackets tied to the Irish mob, I want to first and foremost say that it's of extreme importance that your character has his own life outside of the mob, to ensure that your character isn't too phlegmatic or one dimensional, passivity is a widely important factor in a characters development and I advise you to do some research and look into creating a profile that will depict you, as a character, so others will be able to comprehend the picture you're trying to paint. Don't be afraid to bar tend, bounce, work in construction, sanitation or in the port authority, just because it doesn't tie in with the faction doesn't go to say that your character can't work for a living. This is what seperates, to me, a seasoned roleplayer and somebody who wants to learn and progress from somebody who's just "here".

Moving on, once you've established a character and gained recognition by mob members, it's of equal importance that you stick to the script and don't navigate off character. Find something you're good at and stick to it, don't force programs on unique characters. There's multiple rackets that frequent within Irish-American mobs but predominantly known for their wickedness and viciousness, muscle frequently plays into the equation. Irish-American mobs are no stranger to brute force and for years, became renowned for their brutality and willingness to get their hands dirty, even if that meant handling the Italians' dirty work, who they would largely consider an oppressor in their native Boston. This frequently consisted of murder for hire, kidnapping, extortion, loan sharking and fencing. Despite that being their forte, they were involved in multiple other rackets such as drugs and arms trafficking on a minor scale and periodically carried out heists and robberies. Again, I think the most common misconception the majority of you, as faction members, have picked up when I defined low-level thugs and hoodlums was misconstrued with the term hooligan. That's completely in the wrong direction you should be aiming for and you should be putting more emphasis on serving as muscle: thugs, on a street level doesn't mean you have to be moving in your own area, but you should be moving in the same increments as you would in your own area. Don't be trying to become all these big-time dope pushers and gun slingers because it goes completely against the image we're going for.

Again, this is just a blueprint to better yourself, as a roleplayer. Take this in your stride and you'll learn tips and tricks along the way. Don't rush your development because that'll do nothing but halt your progress in the faction. It's hard to make an accurate assessment of today's Irish mob perfectly, but through years of studying and comprehension I've done my best to combine both the traditional aspect of it and modernise it all the same.

Films based on the most renowned Irish mobs

Black Mass
While his brother Bill (Benedict Cumberbatch) remains a powerful leader in the Massachusetts Senate, Irish hoodlum James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) continues to pursue a life of crime in 1970s Boston. Approached by FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), the lawman convinces Whitey to help the agency fight the Italian mob. As their unholy alliance spirals out of control, Bulger increases his power and evades capture to become one of the most dangerous gangsters in U.S. history.

State of Grace
Gone for a decade, Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) is welcomed back into the fold in his Irish-American neighborhood in New York City. A one-time street tough, Terry is now an undercover officer targeting crime boss Frankie Flannery (Ed Harris). In the name of duty, Terry rekindles his dormant friendship with Frankie's younger brother, Jackie (Gary Oldman). But as Terry gets closer to his goal, his feelings for the youngest Flannery, his old flame Kathleen (Robin Wright), complicate his mission.

The Departed
South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes under cover to infiltrate the organization of gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Billy gains the mobster's trust, a career criminal named Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) infiltrates the police department and reports on its activities to his syndicate bosses. When both organizations learn they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin must figure out each other's identities to save their own lives.

Kill the Irishman
Mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) ignites a turf war in 1970s Cleveland that leads to the collapse of the Mafia in several major U.S. cities.

Although these are not completely representative, they are the closest thing you're going to get because the Irish mob isn't as mainstream. Again, these are all old, but I want you to observe the characters rather than the plot. The linguistics, the behaviour, the attitude, the demeanour. This isn't an actual representation, but I want you to get the feel for the tone and the environment of these people, who and what they surround themselves with.

David Wilson, Automotive Editor
Upon appearance, K&K Automotives appears to be in bad shape. The building has begun to show signs of its age, having been around since the late 1970s. However, despite the initial appearance, the garage offers fantastic service & mechanics sure do have expertise!
The addition of the dealership is a pleasant addition, especially considering the socio-demographic of the local community. Affordable cars are available at prices accessible to those in the area, with the understanding your car has been fully serviced & attended to before purchase.
